Juanie Fowlkes is a visual narrative artist, writer, and scholar working at the intersection of film, serialized television, and spatial media. Her practice centers on Black love, intergenerational intimacy, and stories of becoming, using textual precision, spatial depth, and narrative patience to illuminate Black interiority. She treats screenplays, archives, and gallery installations as unified components of a single discipline.

Her television credits include Amazon Prime’s THEM (S2). On the festival circuit, her independent short films have screened across a robust lineup of venues, including the Urbanworld Film Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival, Toronto Black Film Festival, Roxbury International Film Festival, and Twin Cities Black Film Festival, among others. Expanding her work into physical space, she is currently in development on two multi-channel video installations: Give Me Some Sugar and Coming of Age.

Juanie serves as a Professional Lecturer of Screenwriting at DePaul University, with previous faculty appointments at Cornell University, Cal State LA, and Elon University. A former Lena Waithe Hillman Grad Mentee, she holds an MFA in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute Conservatory and a BA from the University of the District of Columbia, where she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Raised in a military family with roots in Enterprise, Alabama, Juanie spent her early twenties touring as a vocalist across Eastern Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. When she isn't writing or teaching, she can be found making fresh pasta, rewatching favorite rom-coms, or hosting intimate dinner parties.
